HYPNOTHERAPY AND PAST LIVES REGRESSION: HOCUS POCUS OR FOCUS-FOCUS?!

HOCUS POCUS, a phrase commonly expressed by modern magicians, began as a 17th-century magical incantation slang meaning “trickery.” Hocus pocus originated as a mock-Latin for-this-is-my-body parody for the Catholic Communion phrase, “hoc est enim corpus meum.” Hocus Pocus also evolved to originate the term, “hoax.”

FOCUS means to concentrate attention on a specific subject. In HYPNOTHERAPY jargon, FOCUS is brought about via a deep and relaxed state known as TRANCE. While in trance, an individual, in this dream-like state, has the added power to imagine anything within the individual’s cognitive reason and experience.

The power to imagine is key in hypnotherapy. IMAGINATION is the cognitive ability to form mental images and sensations. Imagination involves the ability to think creatively. Through HYPNOTHERAPY compliant clients form mental images of something or things, that are not currently present to the person’s senses or perhaps never before wholly perceived in that same person’s reality.

Inducing someone hypnotically into a trance-like state has its publicly documented pros and cons. The significant pro is the ability to create a non-invasive positive behavior change for the client who is seeking such. And the significant con of hypnotherapy in general, is the nature of its variable effectiveness, the results of which depending entirely on the individual’s engagement and suggestibility (compliance) throughout the session, and for sure too, the skillset of the practitioner (the professional credentials).

Back to HOCUS POCUS. Skepticism with regard to hypnotherapy stems from its portrayal as stage entertainment. Stereotypically, the stage hypnotist is a gaudily dressed male and a sexily attractive female assistant steering the show. Several volunteer wannabe and plebeian exhibitionists are encouraged to jump onto the stage for their screening to be an active participant in the main show. After a few minutes of group how-high-can-you-jump commands delivered by the hypnotist, the actual number of selected participants is whittled to five or six players, who dutifully take their seats to become the show. And you know the show. Female and male volunteers unabashedly playing imaginary trumpets, speaking nonsensical moon talk, laughing then crying then suddenly dropping their heads in deep slumber at the snap of a finger. Yes. Stage entertainment indeed, having an entire audience belly laughing at the gormless connotation of hypnotherapy certainly challenges the seriousness of the therapy.

And of course, this type of comedy combined with the lack of standardized regulation in the industry leads, too, to a lack of credibility and a certain skepticism toward the reputation of hypnotherapy in general.

Now back to FOCUS-FOCUS. In spite of its entertaining and comedic reputation, in both academic and medico communities, hypnotherapy is increasingly being recognized as a valid, evidence-based, non-invasive therapy. Rather than a hocus pocus magical mystery, the focus-focus trance prompted by a licensed professional, can most certainly create for the client, a concentrated attention that can alter behavior and perception toward positive change.
